Simple Snacks Using Hazelnut Spread

Over the last few weeks I have been working to help spread awareness and understanding surrounding the Health Star Rating system. However there has been a little confusion relating to the stars and how ‘healthy’ a product is, so I quickly wanted to clear up a few points. Firstly, this system is purely for use when comparing packaged foods, and is really only intended to be used when comparing ‘like’ foods. For example, a banana shouldn’t (and can’t) be compared with a 5 star pre packaged snack. However we can compare two different types of biscuits to help determine which is the better choice. I hope this clears up any misconceptions. Please remember that this system is completely voluntary, and has been designed to help make shopping easier for us – you can always do further research and reading of labels to make choices which align with your family’s lifestyle.Β 

There’s no secret most of us love to indulge in a good spoonful (or 5 lol) of Hazelnut Spread. And yes while it isn’t the healthiest of choices when it comes to snacks, we should be allowed to treat ourselves sometimes right? Since I’ve started using the Health Star Rating guide, I have been randomly checking my favourite packaged foods during each grocery shop – mainly out of interest, but also so I can start replacing products with their better alternatives. I recently discovered one brand of Hazelnut Spread that is a 5 on the Health Star Rating, in comparison to the ‘old favourite’ which is only half a star (0.5)! Because of this, I thought I would share a few kid (and mama) friendly snack ideas you can make using Hazelnut Spread. You will notice in the snack ideas that I have tried to create fairly nutritionally balanced options – which incorporate the use of fruits and products that are low GI. With both the wraps & the english muffins – I have sourced the highest star rating for their respective categories.

I hope you enjoy the recipes below, and see how simple and easy it is to make a few changes to create better alternatives without missing out on the things we enjoy eating. Please be mindful that these are ‘sometimes’ foods, and where possible it is always best to choose fresh produce. However, as we are all busy mums, with children that don’t always eat as ‘perfectly’ as we would like, it is important to remember it is all about balance, moderation and trying our best.

Banana ‘Sushi’


INGREDIENTS

  • Flat Bread, Mountain Bread or Tortilla Wraps (try to choose the highest star rating)
  • 1 x Banana
  • Hazelnut Spread (with 5 star rating)

DIRECTIONS

  • Lay wrap/bread out flat.
  • Create a thin layer of hazelnut spread across the entire surface of the wrap/bread.
  • Place banana along the end of the wrap.
  • Slowly roll the wrap up
  • Cut into bite sized pieces

 

Mini Muffin Pizzas

INGREDIENTS

  • English Muffins
  • Strawberries, Blueberries, Bananas – Fruit of choice
  • Hazelnut Spread Β (with 5 star rating)

DIRECTIONS

  • Toast muffins until warm and crisp
  • Spread a thin layer of hazelnut spread on the muffin
  • Top with chopped up fruit of choice – banana and strawberries always are a good combo together.
  • Optional: Sprinkle with desiccated coconut to act as the ‘cheese’.

Hazelnut Swirl Banana Bread

Tips when baking banana bread
Buttermilk is a must to help the bread rise.

Banana bread is best made with overripe bananas. I like to buy a bunch when they are on sale, wait until they are overripe and freeze them in zip lock bags.

Don’t overmix the bread batter.

Banana bread takes a little while to bake, so you need to watch it and make sure the top doesn’t burn. If you notice the top starting to overcook or burn, simply cover it with foil.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 150 g melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 mashed bananas
  • 1/2 cup of Hazelnut Spread with 5 star rating (or 1 cup depending on how much you love the stuff)

DIRECTIONS:

  • Preheat oven to 180Β°c. Lightly grease a loaf tin and line with baking paper.
  • Mix flour and sugar in a large bowl. Set aside.
  • Whisk buttermilk, butter, eggs and bananas in a bowl and add to flour mix. Mix until combined.
  • Spoon bread mix into the loaf tin and with each layer swirl through some Hazelnut Spread with a knife.
  • Bake for around 1 hour or until the skewer comes out clean.
  • Once cooled, swirl some hazelnut spread across the top of the banana bread. ENJOY!
